‘This is the end of my journey South,’ says Yves de Preux, who has just completed a three-and-a-half year journey on the road, from France to the Southernmost point of Africa.
In March, after three years behind the wheels of an e-trike, Yves reached Cape Town – his first goalpost for a whirlwind adventure from France to South Africa.
Now, the YouTuber has reached the furthest and final point in his journey South, arriving in Cape Agulhas.
From France to Cape Town via e-trike
The adventure began in 2022, when ‘Kino Yves’ (as he is known online) set off on an ambitious challenge to travel from Europe to Africa on an electric recumbent trike (e-trike).
He documented his travels through 16 countries—from France to South Africa—on his YouTube channel, which has amassed over 300,000 subscribers.
The route took him from Reims, France, through the Balkans and into Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, and finally, South Africa.
From cycling through lion territory and stealth camping to avoid elephants to navigating war-torn regions, Yves’ three-and-a-half year journey has entailed a number of hair-raising moments.
After more than 19,000 km on the road, de Preux successfully reached Cape Town in March this year.
“I can’t believe what I did—it’s unreal! I managed to cross Africa on my electric tricycle. I rode all the way from France to Cape Town. It’s pure happiness,” he shared on social media.

Ending the chapter in The Cape of Needles
After a well-deserved rest in Cape Town, Yves resumed his journey in late April, setting his sights on the Southernmost point of the African continent – The Cape of Needles, or Cape Agulhas.
Along the way, he documented his travels through the sleepy town of Kommetjie, then to Cape Point, False Bay, Simon’s Town, Muizenberg, Strand, and Betty’s Bay. From Kleinmond he stopped in Hermanus for a spot of wine tourism before setting off to Napier and Struisbaai, landing finally at the Southernmost point of Africa in the Cape Agulhas.
By Mid-May, Yves had announced that he has reached his final destination in his journey Southwards, writing:
“After 3 years and a half on the road, I finally reached Cape Agulhas, the Southernmost point of Africa!”

Unlike the more famous Cape of Good Hope, which is often mistaken as the continent’s southernmost point of Africa, Cape Agulhas holds the true title at approximately 34.8°S latitude.
Its name, derived from Portuguese meaning “Cape of Needles,” reflects the sharp reefs and rocky coast that have made it notorious for shipwrecks.
With the Indian Ocean to his left and the South Atlantic to his right, the trailblazing e-biker grins from ear-to-ear as he marks the end of a journey that pushed the limits of challenge and discovery as he explored two continents from behind the wheels of his trike.
Marking the end of a chapter, de Preux plans on enjoying a final rest in Cape Agulhas before riding back to France via West Africa.
