According to IOL, flights from Cape Town to Durban are particularly pricey this Easter. Budget carriers like FlySafair start at around R1,200, while full-service airlines such as South African Airways and Airlink reach nearly R3,800 for a one-way ticket. Social media reactions show many travellers are surprised by the steep hike, with some joking that it’s cheaper to take a road trip than a flight.

Johannesburg routes still competitive, but busy

The Cape Town–Johannesburg corridor remains the most competitive, thanks to frequent daily flights. One-way fares hover between R1,200 and R2,800, while the Durban–Johannesburg route is among the cheapest domestically, starting at R900 on budget carriers and reaching about R3,000 on premium options.

Limited flights drive up costs elsewhere

Less-serviced routes, like Gqeberha to Cape Town, are seeing higher fares as well. Tickets range from R1,000 to R2,500, partly because LIFT doesn’t operate on this route, reducing competition and leaving travellers with fewer choices.
