After nearly two months of recovery work following devastating floods, Bontebok National Park is preparing to welcome visitors once again.

South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that the Western Cape reserve will begin a phased reopening from 1 August 2026, allowing guests back into selected areas while restoration work continues on infrastructure damaged during the Breede River floods.
The park was forced to close in early June after severe flooding caused extensive damage to roads, hiking trails, viewing decks and visitor facilities. Several sections became unsafe after the Breede River burst its banks, washing away infrastructure and leaving parts of the reserve inaccessible.
Visitors will once again be able to access parts of the park, although not every facility will be available immediately.
SANParks says the reopening will happen in stages to ensure visitor safety while repair work continues. Some roads, trails and recreation areas remain closed because of ongoing rehabilitation, and guests are encouraged to check the latest updates before travelling.
Accommodation will also return gradually as facilities are inspected and restored. Areas that remain unsafe will stay closed until all necessary repairs have been completed. Visitors planning a trip are encouraged to confirm the availability of accommodation, activities and accessible routes before arriving, as conditions may change while rehabilitation work progresses.
