Light aircraft crashes in Midrand business complex, leaving two injured

A light aircraft crashed into a business complex in Midrand on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in two people injured and prompting an emergency response on the scene.

The aircraft came down in Randjesfontein, near the intersection of Old Pretoria Road and New Road. According to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), two people were injured in the crash and were being treated by private ambulance services at the scene. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and Grand Central Fire were also present as authorities began responding to the incident.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi commented “At this stage, two occupants sustain injuries. We’ve got our private ambulance services on site treating the patients,”

Reports from the scene indicated that a man and a woman were inside the aircraft when it crashed. A bystander reportedly helped the pair out of the aircraft before emergency services arrived. The occupants were receiving medical assistance following the crash however, their current condition has not been confirmed.

Video footage from the aftermath shows the aircraft at the business complex, with emergency personnel working at the scene. At this stage, the circumstances surrounding the crash is unconfirmed and the relevant authorities are expected to investigate further.

The incident comes as sharp reminder regarding the importance of emergency response services when accidents occur in built-up areas, where an aircraft crash can pose a risk to people and surrounding businesses.
