Getting a passport can be a frustrating process, particularly for travellers hoping to use one of the country’s bank branches that offer Home Affairs services.

According to MyBroadband, South Africans trying to apply for or renew passports through the eHomeAffairs system have reportedly been struggling to find available appointment slots at participating bank branches. The shortage has become severe enough that some applicants are suggesting that going directly to a Home Affairs office may be the easier option.
The bank-based service was introduced to make applications more convenient by allowing eligible South Africans to complete much of the process online before visiting a participating bank branch for biometric capture. Home Affairs currently allows citizens to complete applications, make payments and schedule appointments through its eHomeAffairs platform. However, securing a suitable appointment can be difficult when demand is high and available slots are limited.
While bank branches can offer a more convenient alternative to traditional Home Affairs offices, you do not necessarily need to secure a bank appointment to apply for a passport. For those with an upcoming international trip, remember to allow plenty of time for the passport application process rather than relying on finding a last-minute bank appointment.
