If you’re planning a Cape2Clarens weekend, here’s how to make the most of your time without rushing through it.

Friday: Explore Clarens

After arriving, head to the village square and explore the art galleries, craft shops and cafés. Spend the afternoon browsing local artwork before settling in for dinner at one of the town’s restaurants.

Visiting during the Cape2Clarens Wine Tasting Festival? The event runs from 15 to 17 October 2026, with tastings hosted at participating venues around the village. Check the programme before planning your evening.

Saturday: Discover Golden Gate

Around 20km from Clarens, Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a must for it’s towering sandstone cliffs, rolling grasslands and mountain scenery.

Take the R712 through the park, stopping for photographs, a hike or wildlife viewing along the way. Pack water and warm clothing and check trail conditions before setting out.

Back in Clarens, explore the Clarens Village Conservancy. It’s walking trails offer mountain views without requiring another long drive. Alternatively, spend the afternoon browsing galleries or enjoying another wine tasting.

Sunday: One last morning

Enjoy breakfast in the village before a final stroll through it’s shops and galleries. If you have extra time, extend your trip into the surrounding Eastern Free State, with Fouriesburg offering another glimpse of the region’s countryside.

Make a weekend of it

Stay near the village square for easy access to restaurants and galleries or choose a countryside cottage for a quieter escape. Book accommodation ahead of busy festival weekends and leave room in your itinerary for spontaneous stops.

Cape2Clarens may be the reason for the journey, but the Free State is the reason to stay. Between the sandstone mountains, village charm and outdoor adventures, two days offer a taste of the region without trying to do it all.
