Cape Town motorists travelling through Phola Park will need to adjust their routes this week, as construction work linked to the MyCiTi Phase 2A project brings partial traffic restrictions to a key intersection.

The City of Cape Town will partially close the intersection of Duinefontein Road (M10) and Govan Mbeki Road (M9) from 05:00 on Thursday, 5 November, until midnight on Friday, 13 November 2026.
The work forms part of the City’s ongoing upgrades to transport infrastructure for the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service, which is intended to improve public transport connections across the metro’s south-east.
The City has advised motorists to take note of the following changes during the closure:
- Southbound on Duinefontein Road: Traffic will not be able to continue through the intersection towards Jakes Gerwel Drive. Motorists will only be permitted to turn right towards Lansdowne or left towards Gugulethu.
- Northbound on Duinefontein Road: Traffic travelling from Jakes Gerwel Drive will not be permitted to enter the intersection.
Motorists travelling along Jakes Gerwel Drive who need to access the eastbound lanes of Govan Mbeki Road are advised to use Heinz Road instead.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, said the restrictions were necessary to allow the contractor to carry out upgrades associated with the MyCiTi rollout.
‘During this closure, the contractor will undertake important upgrades that are related to the roll-out of Phase 2A of the MyCiTi bus service. I want to urge the public to please avoid this intersection as far as possible during this time,’ Quintas said.
Phase 2A is planned to connect areas including Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain with Wynberg and Claremont, with new and upgraded roads, bus infrastructure and supporting facilities forming part of the development.
The City has warned that the temporary restrictions will affect traffic flow in the surrounding area and has encouraged commuters to make alternative arrangements where possible.
Temporary traffic signage and flag personnel will be deployed to assist road users through the affected area.
‘Road users must please use alternative routes, and plan for disruptions as the closure will impact traffic flow in the area. I want to thank the local community and commuters in advance for their patience and cooperation as we work toward keeping Cape Town moving,’ Quintas stated.
Motorists travelling through Phola Park, Gugulethu, Lansdowne and surrounding areas should allow additional time for their journeys and follow the temporary traffic arrangements until the intersection restrictions are lifted.
The partial closure is scheduled to end at midnight on Friday, 13 November 2026.
