The 5 best B&Bs in Durban

Posted on 16 September 2018 By Matt Sterne

The designs may vary from classic to flamboyant, but all these B&Bs win over their guests through their top-drawer hospitality.

1. Terebinte

This B&B in Glenwood has been wonderfully decorated by its artistic owners, Gerhard and Juriëtta Duraan (there’s a room of dozens of old cameras), and is furnished with antique and eclectic pieces. The charming old house has wooden floors, high ceilings and a garden of mango and banana trees. Each of the two en-suite rooms has a distinct theme with the bigger room boasting a bar fridge, microwave, DSTV and tea/coffee facilities. It offers off-street parking and is centrally located. They have a sister B&B, Tamarisk, around the corner that has equally whimsical interior design and comfort.

2. An Upper Room

The warm welcome from the hosts, Edith and Leon Tuback, sets the tone for a comfortable and peaceful stay at their place at the top of Pigeon Valley. A parade of birds come through the tropical garden while the swimming pool offers a perfect way to cool off on hot summer days. The stunning views over the harbour and city lights at night are another attraction here. Dinners or braai packs are available by arrangement and the use of a barbecue is permitted. There’s one self-catering cottage and four double rooms. They’re all air-conditioned, with DSTV, tea/coffee making facilities, and WiFi.

3. Sparkling Star

Friendly service, graceful hosts, and a delicious breakfast are the standout features of Sparkling Star. This popular guesthouse in Glenwood has a beautiful pool area with an ornate gazebo and towering palm tree. All five bedrooms are spacious and have a private en-suite bathroom, DSTV, WiFi, air conditioner, and tea/coffee facilities. Sparkling Star is within walking distance to Davenport Centre, and a host of restaurants and pubs, as well as five kilometres from Marine Parade.

4. Westville B&B

This 5-star guest house, run by Emma and Nic Jacobs, is in the heart of Westville and consists of two adjacent homes set in sub-tropical gardens. Guests can relax in the lounges or alongside the pristine pools. Each of the 10 rooms is named after an artist and prints of their work are portrayed in that room, featuring artists such as Austin, Rivera, Renoir, and Gauguin. All rooms include an en-suite bathroom, WiFi, tea/coffee facilities, air conditioning and DSTV. Along with sumptuous breakfasts, dinners are available by prior arrangement on weekdays. It’s walking distance to two small shopping centres, grocery stores, restaurants, takeaways, and a gym.

5. MyThai Guesthouse

MyThai – not just a rum-based cocktail, but also a Thai-themed guest house in Morningside. It’s inspired by the owners’ many years of travelling throughout South East Asian countries and culminating with a five-year period of living in Thailand. The lush garden, two pools, sun deck and kaleidoscope of rooms all contribute to the tropical feel of the place. Offering full English breakfasts, all rooms are comfortably furnished, ensuite with air conditioning, coffee and tea making facilities, DSTV and there’s WiFi in the communal areas. It enjoys a prime location, just off Florida road (yet still quiet), and is walking distance to shops, bars, nightclubs, restaurants and cafes.
