Whether you’re a quartz collector or looking for something shiny, South Africa has a colourful array of crystal gems to obtain and marvel at. While the diamonds in Kimberly are a well-known contender for South Africa’s top gemstone, there are so many more sparkling wonders to appreciate.

Are you looking to unearth the natural gems this country is known for? Take a look at a few crystals, minerals and formations and their unique properties commonly found in South Africa.

Blue Lace Agate

Usually swirling with blue, white and grey bands, this quartz is a wonderful option for collectors looking for an interesting formation that resembles an icy piece of a glacier. This product was discovered in Namibia and is often mined within this region. This item often presents a sparkling druzy appearance, which makes this rocky object an impressive crystal to display.

Suggested healing properties: Support, serenity and a good tool for self-soothing

Carnelian

A gemstone that has the appearance of a flame in rock form, this semi-precious stone has a red and brown hue and is often infused with a wonderful white banding segment. While found internationally, deposits of carnelian have been discovered in South Africa as well.

Carnelian has had a long-standing significance in history, such as ancient Egyptians. They believed this stone was a great source to help their soul navigate their way to the afterlife.

Suggested healing properties: Vitality, courage and concentration.

Unakite

A medley of green and pink within its composition, Unakite is a metamorphic rock that is a wonderful choice for individuals looking for a mineral to activate the third eye chakra. Beyond South Africa, Unakite can also be found in North America. This formation is usually tumbled to fully appreciate the magical swirl of colours.

Suggested healing properties: Self-love, focus and recalling past lives.

Rose Quartz

One of the most popular beginner crystals, rose quartz is a lovely pink-hued gemstone that is often referenced as the ‘heart stone’. This is another hardy object that has been used throughout history, some claims dating back to ancient Rome as a way to prevent wrinkles. Whether it’s a raw or tumbled specimen, this quartz is often easy to obtain (which makes it an affordable quartz to obtain).

Suggested healing properties: Emotional healing and unconditional love.

Spirit Quartz

A natural beauty exclusive to the Magaliesberg Mountains in South Africa, Spirit Quartz is a stunning and shimmering tower usually showered with small clusters of crystallised points. This object comes in a variety of colours and is also referred to as a cactus or pineapple quartz by its interesting and spiky appearance.

Suggested healing properties: Healing, patience and helps regulate energy levels.
