Young environmentalist dedicates birthday to raise funds for bird sanctuary

Soon to be ten-year-old Durbanite, Romario Valentine has dedicated his upcoming birthday to helping Africa’s largest bird sanctuary in a selfless gesture. He has encouraged friends, family and anyone who is interested to donate towards his cause to support Birds of Eden in Plettenberg Bay, instead of giving him gifts for his 10th birthday on July 26.

Romario is already an active environmentalist, proving to be an example and inspiration to many who are much older than him by actively contributing to conservation.

Currently, he is Ocean Sole’s youngest ambassador and has cleaned up beaches 150 times in the past 4 years already. In August of 2020, he commenced a self-funded tree-planting campaign and has sponsored 26 trees on four continents so far.

The amount of initiatives he is involved in goes on, like actively participating in the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). This is a reforestation initiative to plant 100 million hectares of land to sequester carbon and fight desertification.

Romario’s dedication and selflessness are proving inspirational and the funds raised by his birthday campaign will go towards the completion of a 30x30m aviary in Birds of Eden for abandoned African Grey parrots, which are almost extinct in the wild.

Those who would like to help Romario can support his fundraising on Backabuddy here.
