Planning your December or January escape? South Africa’s summer events calendar is already filling up, with everything from major international concerts and food festivals to camping weekends, outdoor theatre and New Year’s Eve parties.

Here are some of the events worth putting on your calendar now.
December 2026
Sean Paul
3 December, Cape Town | 4 December, Pretoria | 6 December, Durban
Sean Paul is bringing his dancehall hits to South Africa for a three-city tour in December.
The Grammy Award-winning artist performs at Grand Arena at GrandWest in Cape Town on 3 December, SunBet Arena in Pretoria on 4 December and Durban ICC on 6 December.
Expect Get Busy, Temperature, We Be Burnin’ and plenty of other songs that have been filling dancefloors for decades.
Mitchells Plain Festival
4 to 6 December, Cape Town
The Mitchells Plain Festival returns to Westridge Gardens from 4 to 6 December.
The large community festival brings together food, fashion, gadgets, motor vehicles, furniture, businesses and entertainment, with organisers describing it as one of the Western Cape’s biggest community events.
AmfiHart
4 and 5 December, Hartenbos
Head to the Garden Route for AmfiHart, a two-day music event at the ATKV Hartenbos Amphitheatre.
It’s a good option if you’re already planning a festive-season trip along the coast and want to add a live-music stop to the itinerary.
Garden Route Rare Plant Festival
12 and 13 December, George
Gardeners can make a stop at the Garden Route Botanical Garden in George for the third annual Garden Route Rare Plant Festival.
Rare succulents, cacti, bonsai, bromeliads, orchids, carnivorous plants, indoor plants and other unusual specimens will be on sale. The plant sale itself is free, although normal garden entry fees apply.
Young at Heart Festival
11 to 13 December, Cape Town
The Young at Heart Festival takes place at Youngsfield Military Base from 11 to 13 December.
The lifestyle event features more than 350 exhibitors and is aimed at older South Africans, families and anyone looking for a broad lifestyle-focused day out.
Jack White
11 December, Johannesburg | 14 December, Cape Town
Jack White makes his South African return in December, with a show at Old Park Station in Johannesburg on 11 December followed by an outdoor concert at Kirstenbosch on 14 December.
The Cape Town date should be particularly appealing if you fancy pairing a major concert with a summer weekend in the city.
J. Cole
12 December, Johannesburg
J. Cole brings The Fall-Off Tour to FNB Stadium on 12 December.
The Johannesburg concert is one of December’s biggest international hip-hop shows, with tickets already available.
Cape Town Chilli Festival
13 December, Cape Town
Things are about to get hot at the Cape Town Chilli Festival at Sunningdale Sports Complex.
The one-day event includes chilli-eating competitions, more than 60 chilli-related products, craft breweries, gin distillers, food trucks, an artisanal makers’ market, kids’ activities, lawn games and even a rodeo bull.
It’s family-friendly, making it an easy addition to a Cape Town summer itinerary.
Limp Bizkit
13 December, Johannesburg
The following day, Limp Bizkit takes over FNB Stadium.
The band’s South African debut includes Ecca Vandal and Jack Parow on the bill, making this one for fans of rock, nu-metal and a healthy dose of early-2000s nostalgia.
Brandy
14 December, Cape Town | 17 and 18 December, Pretoria
R&B fans have three chances to see Brandy in South Africa.
The Grammy Award-winning singer performs at Grand Arena at GrandWest in Cape Town on 14 December before heading to SunBet Arena in Pretoria for shows on 17 and 18 December.
The All White Soul Sessions have an all-white dress code, so this is one where your outfit needs to make it onto the packing list.
Kehlani
15 December, Pretoria | 17 December, Cape Town
Kehlani brings her world tour to South Africa with Destin Conrad as a special guest.
The Pretoria show takes place at SunBet Arena on 15 December, followed by Grand Arena at GrandWest in Cape Town on 17 December.
Orah Festival
17 to 20 December, Karoo
For a very different kind of summer escape, Orah Festival takes place at POD Place of Dreams in the Karoo from 17 to 20 December.
It’s a multi-day festival aimed at people looking for music, camping and a break from the usual December crowds.
Love & Light Festival
19 December, Cape Town
The Ostrich in Cape Town hosts Love & Light Festival on 19 December.
The outdoor event brings together music, DJs and a summer setting, making it another option for anyone staying in Cape Town over the festive period.
Afrikaans Oppi Weskus
28 December, Langebaan
The West Coast gets its own big summer music day when Afrikaans Oppi Weskus takes place at Curro Langebaan on 28 December.
The line-up includes Spoegwolf, Francois van Coke, Early B, Eden, Kurt Darren and Zaan Sonnekus, among others.
If you’re heading to Langebaan for the holidays, this is an easy one to build into a longer West Coast trip.
Wild Spirit Festival
28 December to 2 January, Nature’s Valley
For a slower, outdoorsier New Year’s option, Wild Spirit Festival returns to Nature’s Valley.
The five-day camping festival combines music and performances with workshops, talks, nature and camping. A special decompression party takes place on New Year’s Day.
The organisers say tickets are limited, so this is one to plan rather than leave until the last minute.
Trans Agulhas Challenge
December, Mossel Bay
If you prefer your summer entertainment with a bit of horsepower, the Trans Agulhas Challenge reaches Mossel Bay on 27 December.
The powerboat race is a long-running South African coastal sporting event and makes for a different kind of festive-season outing.
Beyond the Mountain NYE Festival
30 December to 1 January, Swellendam
The Beyond the Mountain NYE Festival takes place at Utopia near Swellendam from 30 December to 1 January.
It’s an outdoor music festival with a destination feel, making Swellendam a good base if you want to combine the event with a few days exploring the surrounding Overberg.
New Year’s Eve
Piano People
30 December, Cape Town
Piano People heads to Cabo Beach Club on 30 December.
The event brings the amapiano crowd together for a pre-New Year celebration and is an option for anyone wanting to get the summer party started before 31 December.
Little Forest Festival
31 December to 2 January, Riviersonderend
Spend New Year’s Eve in the countryside at Little Forest Festival at Kromrivier Farm near Riviersonderend.
The electronic music festival runs across three days, with camping and glamping options available.
Campout Dune Fest
31 December to 1 January, Namibia
If camping by the coast sounds preferable to a packed nightclub, Campout Dune Fest offers an outdoor New Year’s Eve option.
The event takes place at Seukelduine and runs from 31 December into New Year’s Day.
January 2027
KUNYE New Year’s Day
1 to 2 January, Cape Town
Start 2027 with KUNYE at The Ostrich.
The New Year’s Day event brings Afro House and Afro Tech to the outdoor venue, with the party continuing into the early hours of 2 January.
Tyla
4 January, Cape Town | 9 January, Johannesburg
Tyla is coming home.
The Johannesburg-born star brings her A*POP World Tour to Green Point Track in Cape Town on 4 January, followed by the Expo Centre at Nasrec in Johannesburg on 9 January.
The South African dates will close out her 34-date global tour, making this one of the biggest music events on the January calendar.
Cape Town Sixes
7 to 9 January, Cape Town
Cricket and summer holidays collide at the Cape Town Sixes, taking place at Western Province Cricket Club from 7 to 9 January.
The short-format cricket event is designed as a spectator-friendly experience, with former international players and entertainment alongside the action.
Maynardville Open-Air Festival
13 January to 14 March, Cape Town
Cape Town’s Maynardville Open-Air Festival returns for another summer season from 13 January.
The 2027 programme includes ballet, jazz, classical music, opera and theatre. January highlights include The Architecture of Beshert, Jazz in the Park, Beethoven Bewitched, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Town City Ballet’s Noir.
The season’s production of Macbeth begins in February.
Wolfkop Weekender
14 to 18 January, Citrusdal
The Wolfkop Weekender is part camping trip, part music festival.
Taking place at Wolfkop Camping Villages in Citrusdal from 14 to 18 January, the event combines electronic music with camping, glamping, river activities and a mountain setting.
It’s particularly suited to people who want the festival itself to be part of a weekend away.
Dave Koz with Chris Walker
23 January, Cape Town | 24 January, Pretoria
Contemporary jazz saxophonist Dave Koz returns to South Africa in January with Chris Walker as special guest.
The pair perform at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden on 23 January before heading to SunBet Arena in Pretoria on 24 January.
Planning a summer event trip?
If you’re travelling for an event, don’t just book the ticket and worry about everything else later.
December and January are peak travel months, so accommodation in popular coastal towns and festival destinations can fill quickly. If you’re travelling to another province, it’s also worth looking at transport before the event gets closer.
And check the official event or ticketing website before making the trip. Line-ups, venues, times and ticket availability can change.
