In the fair Cape this winter? Cosy up with these heavenly Helderberg meals

Posted by Ilhaam Hoosain on 28 June 2022

The chefs at Somerset West’s Erinvale, Lourensford, Morgenster and Vergelegen estates have collaborated to offer a variety of classic soup, cheese, bread and wine pairings this winter.

The Heart of the Helderberg collective supports local enterprises and shows off the quality and variety of offerings available in this scenic area, less than an hour from Cape Town.

These serene farms are top choices for dates, celebrations and get-togethers with friends and family. And the winter specials are available from 1 July to 31 August 2022.

Three cold-beating soups are each served with a glass of Lourensford Classique Merlot, at the Oak Terrace bistro and the Magnolia social dining lounge at the Erinvale Hotel and Spa

Across at the Erinvale Golf Clubhouse, there are three tasty soup options inspired by Indian, Portuguese and British cuisine.

From the sub-continent, there is mulligatawny curry soup with lentils, sweet potato, chickpeas and naan, paired with a glass of Vergelegen Sauvignon Blanc, for R110. Caldo verde, a traditional Portuguese green soup with chorizo, potato and kale, topped with a cheese croûte is served with a glass of Morgenster Cabernet Franc, also for R110.

In the best tradition of Great Britain, the third choice is a hearty beef soup with cannellini beans, served with sourdough bread and accompanied by a glass of Lourensford The Dome Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, for R125.

Booking is necessary. Phone 021 847 1144.

Lourensford Wine Estate

The Coffee Roasting Company coffee shop is offering a soup of the day, with a pretzel stick, for R55. And the Millhouse Kitchen is also offering a soup of the day, this time with a glass of Lourensford Flower Collection white or red wine, for R65.

The tasting room is open from Monday to Sunday, 9am–5pm. Phone 021 852 1738.

Vergelegen Wine Estate

Over at the esteemed Vergelen Wine Estate it is not soup that makes the winter go round, but rather a whole baked creamy camembert cheese with honey and nuts, served with delicious home-baked bread and two glasses of Vergelegen Premium Shiraz or Chardonnay.

The cost for two people is R170 and you can warm up by the new log fireplaces. Phone 021 847 2111.
