Finding a ‘best of’ restaurant is not exactly the easiest task, especially if the menu consists of more generic items like steak, ribs, schnitzels etc – everyone has their own opinion and most restaurants offer those meals. Now, Margaritas Seafood and Steak Restaurant is by far one of the best restaurants in bloemfontein and it’s the place where I’ve been eating, with my family, for almost 10 years now. Margaritas was my very first experience of western fine dining and has been rated the best steak house in Bloemfontein by the locals. To be honest with you, I don’t really eat steak (a theory/story will follow in my next beef-based recipe), so I can’t vouch for that.
Bloemfontein is wrapped in the dry Free State and, unlike Cape Town, there’s no surrounding water for convenient and fresh seafood (we’re seriously fortunate living in Cape Town). Usually, I avoid eating seafood if I’m not by the ocean, but Margaritas still manages to source fresh seafood in the inlands. Margaritas Seafood and Steak Restaurant is a Greek-owned restaurant in Bayswater, Bloemfontein. It’s on the first floor, indoor non-smoking and a balcony smoking section (outside with cover).
When in Bloem, I always make a reservation to have dinner there with my folks. The dish I always order (don’t judge me, it’s really tasty) is the prawn scampi on rice, with a mushroom sauce on the side. And when I’m feeling adventurous (which does happen on occasion), a garlic sauce. This dish is battered king prawns on a bed of seasoned yellow rice with a veggie mix. Other menu items that are quite popular include their vegetarian platter, the Mediterranean sole, the Fillet St Nicolas, the Lobster Thermador and the Kingklip Neptune. Their wine list appeals to all the locals and they offer traditional desserts.
