Volunteers from Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) successfully executed a life-saving mission for an unconscious hiker in the Helderberg Nature Reserve on Tuesday evening, Cape {town} Etc reports.

The rescue operation began amidst alarming reports of screams reverberating off the mountain, instantly transforming into a critical wilderness operation as rescuers mobilised to locate the beleaguered hiker.
After a thorough and rapid search, enhanced by the capabilities of the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS Drone Unit, the team located the unconscious man nestled near a trail. Early assessments indicated a possible fall of 15 to 20 metres, signifying the urgent need for medical intervention.

With temperatures dropping and the patient vulnerable to further exposure, rescuers swiftly initiated active warming strategies, employing heating blankets and a sleeping bag to stabilise his condition.
A team doctor promptly treated the patient on site, ensuring medical care commenced in the wilderness before the hiker was carefully secured into a stretcher for transport down the mountain.
Shortly after midnight, at 12:55 am Wednesday, the hiker was safely transported by ambulance to local hospital facilities for further care. All efforts culminated in a triumph over adversity, as the coordinated efforts between rescuers, medical personnel, and support staff became evident.
As the drama in Helderberg unfolded, WSAR teams faced yet another challenge. At the same time, Table Mountain National Park rangers worked diligently to assist two Philippine visitors who had lost their way near Echo Valley.
The pair had misjudged the time necessary to complete their planned trek and called WSAR’s emergency number 021 937 0300 for support as darkness descended.
As these teams were responding to this situation, a third call came in from two American tourists near Maclear’s Beacon, who found themselves delayed and, realising the time, opted to call for guidance.
Thankfully, both groups were successfully escorted off the mountain and back to safety.
‘Accidents happen on even the most familiar trails,’ emphasised David Nel, spokesperson for Wilderness Search and Rescue. ‘Whether you’re heading out for a short hike or a training run, never underestimate how quickly circumstances can change,’
Nel cautioned adventurers to exercise prudence: ‘Avoid hiking alone, inform someone of your plans, and if your plans change or you encounter delays, don’t hesitate to call for help. Early calls for assistance allow rescuers to monitor the situation and intervene before it escalates,’
In a time where outdoor adventures are cherished, Nel urged hikers to carry essential items, such as warm clothing, sufficient water, a torch, and a fully charged mobile phone, underscoring the importance of preparedness when embarking on such excursions.
As the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway gears up for its annual maintenance closure running from 27 July to 9 August, he implored all mountain users to ensure their plans allow ample time for a safe ascent and descent.
Nel offered heartfelt thanks to every volunteer and partner agency member who contributed their time and expertise during these urgent responses, stating, ‘Their collective efforts across three separate incidents on Tuesday ensured that five people returned safely to their loved ones, and one patient received critical, life-saving care when it was most essential. We wish the injured hiker a swift recovery, and hope all assisted carry fond memories of the mountains together with a lasting respect for the teamwork that keeps our wilderness safe,’
