Living in a large city, riddled with air pollution and smog does leave many opportunities for stargazing. Lucky for South Africans, there is an abundance of vast mountain ranges and other natural landscapes that create the perfect opportunity to experience the magic of an endless starry sky. We’ve created a list of six stunning locations around South Africa for you to marvel at the twinkling stars.

1. Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga
Far from the hustle and bustle of the city is the famous Kruger National park. Known worldwide for its wildlife, this African treasure is also a beautiful destination for stargazing. The areas located further north on the reserve are supposedly better for viewings of the night sky. A particular location favoured by stargazers is the Kruger’s Punda Maria Camp, situated on the northern fringes of the reserve.

2. Drakensberg Mountains, KwaZulu-Natal
The Drakensberg mountains are popular for their scenic views, breathtaking landscape and wicked hiking trails. The mountain is also a perfect spot for escaping the city and spending a night under the clear night sky.

3. Quiver Tree forest, Northern Cape
The Quiver Tree Forest in the Northern Cape is a hidden gem perched between Nieuwoudtville and Loeriesfontein. With their twisted spider-like branches and impressive stature, the trees capture attention and captivate the mind. This forest is even more enchanting when the sun goes down.

4. The Cederberg mountains, Western Cape
The Cederberg mountains are situated just two hours outside of Cape Town. The mountain’s landscape is known for its majestic rock formations, scenic views and indigenous fauna and flora. The Hole in the Wall is an extraordinary natural arch located at the centre of the 300 km stretch of Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape. 6. Golden Gate National Park, Free State
The Golden Gate National Park is located in the Free State. Situated near the Lesotho border, this national park spans an area of approximately 340 square kilometres. Named after the brilliant golden colour that it takes on when the sun illuminates the mountain range, this mountain’s features include deeply eroded sandstone cliffs, rolling hills, and sweeping valleys.
