An invasive Australian crayfish species is spreading rapidly through southern Africa’s river systems, raising alarm among scientists, conservationists and fishing communities alike.

Researchers warn the red claw crayfish could eventually reach the Okavango Delta, one of Africa’s most important wetland ecosystems.
Native to northern Australia and Papua New Guinea, the red claw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) was introduced to southern Africa in the early 1990s for aquaculture purposes. Since then, escaped populations have established themselves across multiple freshwater systems and continue to expand at an unsettling pace.
According to researchers monitoring the spread, the species is capable of travelling several kilometres each year through connected waterways, with floods accelerating its movement downstream. Scientists now fear the crayfish could enter the Okavango Delta within the next decade if the invasion continues unchecked.
The impact extends beyond biodiversity concerns. Freshwater ecologists say the crayfish are aggressive predators that feed on aquatic plants, snails, fish eggs and juvenile fish. In ecosystems that evolved without native freshwater crayfish, local species have little natural defence against the invader.
Communities that rely on inland fisheries are already feeling the effects. Fishers in parts of Zambia and Zimbabwe report damaged nets, reduced catches and mounting costs linked to the species’ spread. Researchers estimate the economic losses in some affected regions run into hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.
The crayfish’s ability to thrive in altered environments has made eradication extremely difficult. Experts say controlling populations in large river systems is unlikely to succeed entirely, shifting attention instead toward long-term management strategies. These include community harvesting initiatives aimed at reducing numbers while creating limited economic opportunities.
However, not everyone agrees that turning the invasive species into a commercial food source is the right solution. Some scientists warn that creating financial value around the crayfish could encourage illegal transport and intentional introductions into new water systems. Similar concerns have emerged globally where invasive crayfish species have spread beyond their native habitats.
Researchers are also investigating possible environmental and health risks associated with consumption. Studies conducted in southern Africa have detected elevated concentrations of heavy metals in some crayfish populations, particularly in polluted waterways.
The invasion highlights a broader global issue around invasive freshwater species and the unintended consequences of aquaculture introductions. Earlier international studies have already documented how introduced crayfish species can outcompete native aquatic life and alter river ecosystems over time.
For now, scientists say early detection, monitoring and public awareness remain among the most important tools available. Without coordinated intervention, the spread of the Australian red claw crayfish could continue reshaping southern Africa’s rivers for decades to come.
