Avoiding Russian airspace has created the world’s longest non-stop flight

Cathay Pacific intends initiating the world’s longest commercial passenger flight with a 17-hour non-stop route between New York and Hong Kong.

The ultra-long flight has been designed to steer clear of Russian airspace. The new route will also eliminate a stopover in Los Angeles which was part of the previous routing.

According to Bloomberg News, the airline will connect JFK International to Hong Kong via a flight over the Atlantic Ocean, the UK, southern Europe and parts of central Asia.

The airline is in the process of obtaining overflight permits; it has already confirmed that its Airbus SE A350-1000 is capable of operating the extended route which covers a distance of about 16 618km.

The new non-stop flight will be 1 269km longer than Singapore Airlines’ New York to Hong Kong route which is currently deemed the world’s longest passenger flight.
