Blood Moon to dazzle South African skies next month

South Africans are in for an astronomical spectacle next month as a rare total lunar eclipse, commonly called a Blood Moon, will be visible across the country on Sunday, 7 September.

As per The Citizen, this will be the longest total lunar eclipse since 2022, with the moon turning a deep, eerie red for over an hour, a must-see event for stargazers.

As reported by George Herald, the eclipse will unfold in the evening, with the moon gradually slipping into Earth’s shadow. Reports add that the ‘blood moon‘ effect, caused by sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere, will paint the lunar surface a dramatic shade of red.

The total eclipse phase lasts just over an hour and peak viewing is expected around 8:11pm (exact times may differ by location). Reports indicate that the eclipse will be visible nationwide if clear skies permit.

Viewing tip: The spectacle is safe to watch without special equipment, though binoculars or a telescope can enhance the experience.

This is one of the most striking lunar events of the decade, offering a longer and more vivid display than recent eclipses.

George Herald highlights that such deep red eclipses are rare, making this a can’t-miss moment for astronomy enthusiasts.

Beyond its beauty, the eclipse is a reminder of our place in the cosmos, a shared celestial experience that transcends borders.

With no need for telescopes or travel, this is arguably the most accessible major astronomical event of the year.

Whether you’re an avid stargazer or just love a natural wonder, the 7 September Blood Moon promises to be a breathtaking sight. Grab a blanket, head outside, and look up; it’s a free show from the universe.
