Africa travel 2025: Must-see experiences before they change

Posted on 20 August 2025 By Lee-Ann Steyn

Tourism across Africa is on the cusp of major changes, and some of the continent’s most iconic experiences may never feel the same again. For travellers chasing raw landscapes, rich culture, and unforgettable adventures, 2025 could be a pivotal year.

Zanzibar, Tanzania:

Mid-2025 will see limits on short-term rentals in historic Stone Town. Luxury developments could alter the authentic local vibe that draws visitors, making now the perfect time to wander its winding streets and soak up the culture.

Egypt:

The Grand Egyptian Museum is already drawing record crowds. By 2026, higher ticket prices and restricted access to private tomb tours could make the experience more exclusive — plan ahead to enjoy it before it changes.

South Africa:

With the Rand expected to strengthen later in 2025, travel costs could rise, while new visa rules may require pre-clearance for certain nationalities. Now may be the best moment to explore iconic sites at current rates.

Kenya:

Conservation efforts in the Maasai Mara are tightening tourist numbers. Self-drive safaris could be restricted entirely by 2026, meaning visitors will need to experience the wildlife before these stricter limits take hold.

Morocco:

Parts of the Atlas Mountains and some Berber villages may become off-limits to independent travellers after 2025 due to safety and environmental concerns. Experiencing these communities now offers a rare, authentic window into local life.
