When she broke free, the Ford Ranger was transporting the big cat along the Beesdam road between Stella and Tlakgameng.

Captain Aafje Botma, the spokesperson for SAPS North West, said that the owner only realised that the lioness was missing once he reached his destination, The South African reports.

News24 said that nature reserve workers and farmers are searching for the missing lion.

Animal control specialist Nanti Strydom said, ‘Community members are warned that a lioness escaped. If anybody has any information or has seen anything, please contact nature conservation of your local police station if you see the lioness.’

‘Anyone who spots the lion is urged to contact Nanti Strydom at 082 563 7763, Siyabonga Mseleku at 073 446 7452 or their local police station, said Botma.’

This is a developing story.
