Now, Dometic has introduced a new contender to the local market: the Front Runner Feather-Lite II Rooftop Tent. Designed with mobility and ease in mind, the updated model aims to simplify life on the road without compromising comfort.

Unveiled in Johannesburg on 13 April 2026, the Feather-Lite II builds on the success of its predecessor. It is positioned as one of the lightest and most compact foldable rooftop tents currently available. At just 49 kg, with a closed height of 32 cm, it offers a notably low-profile design. This helps reduce wind resistance while maintaining usable interior space, an important consideration for long-distance travellers and overlanders.

The appeal lies in its practicality. Setup is quick and intuitive, allowing users to transition from parked to camp-ready in a matter of minutes. The process is straightforward: unlatch, unfold, and extend the telescopic ladder. For travellers who move frequently or prefer spontaneous overnight stops, this kind of efficiency makes a tangible difference.

Weather resilience has also been improved. A redesigned overhang creates a sheltered entry point, offering protection from rain when getting in and out of the tent. The structure itself is built from waterproof and UV-resistant 400D polyester, with a 2000 mm water column rating. This ensures durability in a range of conditions, from summer downpours to extended sun exposure.

Inside, the focus shifts to comfort and liveability. The tent includes a 6 cm high-density quilted foam mattress, along with additional internal storage pockets for small essentials. A standout feature is the integrated stargazing panel, which allows campers to take in the night sky without leaving the tent. It is a small detail, but one that enhances the overall outdoor experience.

Ventilation has been carefully considered. Window spring poles improve airflow while also opening up views from within. The flexible flysheet system, equipped with quick-release buckles, allows users to adapt quickly to changing weather conditions. Additional floor space at the base provides room for shoes or gear, helping to keep the sleeping area organised.

The Feather-Lite II is designed to fit a wide range of vehicles, from compact SUVs to larger overlanding setups. This universal compatibility broadens its appeal, especially for travellers who want a versatile solution that can adapt to different trips and terrains.

According to Dometic, the goal is to support a growing community of travellers seeking flexible and reliable outdoor solutions. The emphasis is on creating products that make it easier to explore, while still delivering a comfortable night’s rest.

The Front Runner Feather-Lite II Rooftop Tent is now available in South Africa through Dometic’s website and authorised dealers. It is priced at R16,500, including VAT.

As vehicle-based travel continues to gain traction, gear like this reflects a shift towards lighter, smarter, and more adaptable camping solutions. For many, the freedom to stop and sleep almost anywhere remains one of the biggest draws of life on the road. This latest release leans directly into that idea.
