South Africa’s botanical gardens are inviting visitors in for free as part of National Gardens Week, offering a rare chance to explore some of the country’s most celebrated green spaces without paying an entrance fee.
From 9 to 15 March, a selection of gardens managed by South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) will waive standard entry costs, encouraging locals and travellers alike to reconnect with indigenous landscapes, conservation efforts and outdoor heritage.
Participating gardens span the country, from the iconic Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on the slopes of Table Mountain to Pretoria National Botanical Garden in Gauteng and Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, known for its dramatic waterfall and Verreaux’s eagles. In KwaZulu-Natal, visitors can explore KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Garden, while the Eastern Cape’s Kwelera National Botanical Garden offers a quieter coastal forest experience.
National Gardens Week is designed to highlight the role botanical gardens play beyond their scenic appeal. These spaces function as living museums, conserving rare and threatened plant species, supporting research and educating the public about biodiversity in one of the world’s most botanically rich countries.
For travellers, the week presents an opportunity to build an itinerary around slow exploration. In Cape Town, a morning wander through Kirstenbosch’s fynbos trails can easily pair with a picnic on the lawns or a hike connecting into Table Mountain National Park. In Gauteng, Walter Sisulu’s rocky Highveld landscape provides a nature break within easy reach of Johannesburg’s urban core.
The free-entry initiative also opens the door to more accessible travel. Families, students and budget-conscious visitors can experience world-class gardens without the usual price tag, making it easier to incorporate nature-based activities into city breaks or regional road trips.
While entry is free during the promotional period, visitors are encouraged to check individual garden details in advance, as certain attractions or guided experiences may still carry fees. Bringing along reusable water bottles, sun protection and comfortable walking shoes will help make the most of a full day outdoors.
At a time when meaningful, low-impact travel is increasingly valued, National Gardens Week offers a simple invitation: step into South Africa’s extraordinary plant life, learn about the ecosystems that sustain it, and rediscover the restorative power of green space, all at no cost.
