After months of uncertainty and a heartfelt final farewell, one of Stellenbosch’s most-loved community fixtures is officially making a comeback – this time with renewed energy and fresh support, reports Cape {town} Etc.

Gifting one of the best Christmas presents any street market-loving local could ask for, the Dorp Street Sunday Market team took to social media on Christmas Day to share the joyous news with its followers.
Set to reopen on Sunday, 25 January 2026, the market will once again bring life, colour and connection back to Dorp Street’s oak-lined sidewalks, marking its first return in 18 months.
‘This market has always been about community, connections and supporting local businesses,’ the organisers said in their Christmas Day announcement.
‘We just can’t wait to bring this feeling back to Stellenbosch’.
Having quickly become a much-loved Stellies staple to fight the Sunday scaries since its inception in October 2020, the announcement of the market’s return signalled a meaningful victory within the community.
Back in March 2025, Cape {town} Etc reported on the market’s closure as a result of months of red tape and stalled approvals. What followed was an outpouring of support from vendors, visitors and neighbours, as well as renewed ‘guidance and support from Stellenbosch Municipality’s new Mayor, Jeremy Fasser’.
Reiterating this, the organisers concluded its Christmas Day announcement with: ‘We never gave up, you never gave up, let’s believe in our dreams because we made it possible.’
Suffice it to say, the Dorp Street Sunday Market is ready to pick up where it left off. So what can visitors expect?
Think a curated mix of pop-up stalls, local craftsmanship, vintage finds, unique collectables, home décor and those delightful trinkets you didn’t know you needed. Add to that great food and drinks from local Stellenbosch cafés and restaurants, all enjoyed while strolling beneath historic oak trees and soaking up that vibrant Sunday atmosphere we’ve all grown to love and miss.
