Get ready to view the West Coast’s spring flowers

Posted by Anita Froneman on 31 July 2020

The Cape’s West Coast is popular for its dazzling array of wildflowers during spring season and nature-lovers are starting to gear up as the warmer months draw near.

Unfortunately, there will be no walking among the thousands of flowers that blanket the West Coast National Park this year as only self-drive excursions are allowed, meaning visitors may not leave their vehicles.

However, that doesn’t have to stop you from making a day of it and getting a splendid view of the colourful fynbos welcoming spring. Avid birders can pack their binoculars too, as our feathered friends should be out and about.

The best viewing time is during August and September. Postberg Nature Reserve is popular for flower viewing and will open to visitors on August 4 from 10am to 4pm.

For a detailed description of the vegetation in the Park, click here and for birding information, including a checklist, click here.

To get there, follow the R27 north from Cape Town along the West Coast. The Park is situated about 1 hour 30 minutes from Cape Town.

For more information, visit the SANParks website here. Take note that some facilities are not currently in use due to COVID-19. For queries, contact +27 22 772-2144/5.

Take a look at the spectacular sighting that await visitors:
