Planning an overseas holiday just became a little bit easier for Ghanaian travellers.

Ghanaian passport holders can now travel visa-free to the Maldives, Zambia, and Antigua and Barbuda, following the ratification and implementation of visa waiver agreements between Ghana and the three countries.
The arrangements apply to holders of ordinary, service and diplomatic Ghanaian passports, although the permitted length of stay varies depending on the destination.
Maldives, Zambia and Antigua and Barbuda are now visa-free
For travellers dreaming of a tropical island escape, the Maldives is now accessible to Ghanaian passport holders without an entry visa for up to 30 days.
The same 30-day visa-free period applies to Zambia, giving Ghanaian travellers easier access to one of Southern Africa’s most popular destinations for wildlife, adventure and Victoria Falls. Meanwhile, Antigua and Barbuda allows Ghanaian passport holders to stay for up to 90 days without an entry visa.
For Ghanaian passport holders, this change could make the early stages of travel considerably smoother. Instead of factoring a visa application into the planning process, travellers can instead focus on flights, accommodation and the practical requirements for their trip.
The agreements are already in effect
The latest development follows Cabinet approval announced in April 2026, when Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said agreements had been approved with Antigua and Barbuda, the Maldives and Zambia.
At the time, the proposed agreements were expected to allow citizens of the respective countries to travel without visas for short stays. The move forms part of Ghana’s broader efforts to improve international mobility for its citizens and strengthen bilateral relationships with other countries.
It also comes as Ghana continues to pursue policies aimed at making international travelling easier for both its own citizens and visitors to the country.
Visa-free does not mean entry requirements disappear
While visas are not required for these short stays, travellers should not assume that they can simply arrive with a passport and walk through immigration. Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stressed that travellers are still required to meet the immigration and entry requirements of the destination country.
This includes travelling with a valid passport and any other documents that may be requested by immigration authorities. Travellers should also stay within the permitted period under the relevant visa waiver agreement. The visa waivers also do not automatically cover activities such as working, studying or taking up residence. Anyone intending to undertake an activity that requires a permit will still need to obtain the appropriate approval.
The Ministry has advised travellers to check the latest entry, health and other requirements with the relevant authorities or their nearest embassy or high commission before travelling, as these requirements can change.
For Ghanaian travellers, however, the overall change is significant. Three very different destinations have become much easier to reach, from the beaches and turquoise waters of the Maldives to Zambia’s wildlife and waterfalls, and the Caribbean landscapes of Antigua and Barbuda. It’s another small step towards making international travel less complicated for Ghanaian passport holders.
