The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 6 weather warning for KwaZulu Natal following predictions of heavy rains.

The KwaZulu Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) held an urgent meeting to address the measures needed.

Spokesperson Siboniso Mngadi said, ‘All disaster management centres have been activated to monitor the weather pattern and risk and respond to any unforeseen events.’

SAWS cautioned that flooding could cause damage to bridges, roads, and formal and informal settlements.

Persistent rainfall is predicted from Monday afternoon until midnight, which could affect Ugu, iLembe, eThekwini, uMgungundlovu, and Harry Gwala.

Mngadi said, ‘We appeal to all residents to closely monitor the situation and take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of lives during this period of heavy rainfall.’
