South Africa is on the brink of another wave of geographical renaming, with several well known Eastern Cape towns set to take on new identities.

Among the most significant proposals is East London, which is expected to be renamed KuGompo City. According to BusinessTech, the change forms part of a batch of geographical name updates approved by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, following recommendations by the South African Geographical Names Council.

Before the new names become official, they must still be published in the Government Gazette, a process expected to take place in the coming weeks.

The proposed renaming of East London follows a series of public consultations held in 2025 across Qonce, Mdantsane and surrounding communities. Several options were considered, including Monti and KuGompo. The final recommendation of KuGompo City was selected in part to avoid confusion with an existing settlement that already carries the name KuGompo.

Further inland, the historic Karoo town of Graaff Reinet is also facing a name change. It has been proposed that the town be renamed Robert Sobukwe Town, in honour of the prominent anti apartheid activist and Pan Africanist Congress founder. The move aims to better reflect South Africa’s liberation history and indigenous heritage.

These proposed changes are not isolated. Across the country, more than 100 applications for geographical renaming have been submitted in recent years. The broader initiative seeks to address colonial era place names and align South Africa’s map with its democratic and cultural identity.

Public response remains divided. Supporters argue that renaming restores dignity and historical recognition, while critics point to the potential costs and logistical challenges for residents, businesses and the tourism sector.

As the gazetting process unfolds, travellers and locals alike will be watching closely to see which names are officially adopted and how these changes reshape the stories attached to South Africa’s places.
