Hotels are renting out clothes to lessen your load

Every frequent traveller knows the hassle of packing and carrying around luggage. Not only is it exhausting, but many South African airlines charge extra for checked baggage and again extra if your luggage is overweight. Imagine the freedom of being able to just lock up and go, with all the clothes and accessories you need already waiting for you at your holiday destination.

A hotel group in the US, W Hotels, teamed up with subscription fashion service Rent the Runway and launched a ‘closet concierge’ at selected hotels, according to The New York Times.

Guests who opt for the rental will have access to 15,000 women’s styles and a selection of accessories based on the destination you’re visiting. For $69 (about R1,000) guests can rent four items for up to eight days.

‘It’s great for single-use pieces like winter coats or going-out gear in Aspen that is heavy and bulky to pack, expensive to buy and something travellers won’t likely reuse at home,’ said Anthony Ingham, the global brand leader at W Hotels Worldwide.

Other companies offer similar services, like Lady Jetset that ships clothing to holidaymakers, almost anywhere in the world, wanting to rent instead of pack.

This might be especially convenient for trips needing specific outfits, such as skiing gear or formal events.

We hope South Africa will follow suit soon!
