Newborn hippo calf in Kruger National Park takes first steps

Posted on 25 January 2021

A newborn hippo calf was filmed taking its first steps in the Kruger National Park. The tot is so tiny in comparison to its mother.

Hippos are fascinating creatures. When wading in the water, you’ll be forgiven for thinking these animals are docile and peaceful. Never forget though, there is a reason why hippos can co-exist in the same waters as crocodiles.

Hippos are very aggressive animals and in 2018, it was estimated that 500 people were killed each year in Africa. These animals have incredibly sharp teeth and a bite to a human can end in death without swift medical attention.

Another factor that makes these mammals so mighty is their weight of between 1.5 to 4 tons. Essentially, hippos can crush you to death if one ever decided to sit on you.

Seeing a newborn hippo calf in the wild is definitely a lucky encounter. Take a look at the sweet moment below.
