Perth to build bathroom for Instagrammers near iconic boat shed

Posted on 14 June 2019

The most photographed landmark in Perth, a boat shed, has risen to internet fame in a matter of years.

So much so that the city’s council is spending more than R4 million to build a bathroom for the droves of Instagrammers that flock to the area by bus and car.

Crawley Edge Boat Shed, a bright blue wooden house on stilts at the end of a timber walkway, is on the Swan River but also next to one of Perth’s busiest roads.

Tourists park nearby in the suburbs and have to cross the busy road to reach their photo shoot location.

To make matters worse, the closest public facility is more than 2km away. A nearby fine-dining restaurant has been overwhelmed with tourists who queue to use their bathroom.

The council has decided to build the city’s first ever stand-alone solar-powered toilet, which will cost more than R200,000 a year to maintain.

The shed was built in the 1930s and has changed hands many times over the years. It was restored in 2004 and still proves to be an iconic Perth landmark as it sits pretty on the river.
