SANParks, CapeNature dish out major discounts for winter stays

CapeNature and SANParks are both giving a 40% discount on accommodation in national parks and reserves this winter.

The SANParks special runs from 8 May 2019 to 14 May 2019. The special only applies to new reservations made on its online booking system.

The CapeNature special runs from 1 May 2019 to 31 August 2019.

In both cases, holiday-makers would need to book, pay and stay within the promotion periods to get the special.

Here are four reserves with cozy cottages on special this winter:

Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve, CapeNature

This Little Karoo nature reserve lies between McGregor and Robertson in the Breede River Valley. Take your mountain bike with you and head out on the 8km route or tackle a hiking trail (these range between 1km and 19km in length). There are five recently renovated self-catering cottages. Some come with outdoor braais, indoor fireplaces and even a jacuzzi. All cottages can accommodate up to eight people.

Where: About 15km south of Robertson on the road to McGregor

Rate: From R1,000 per night

Goukamma Nature Reserve

Not only is this reserve a World Heritage Site, but it has a forest, estuary, river, lake and a view of the ocean to boot. The reserve lies between Knysna and Sedgefield and offers whale watching, horse riding on the beach, hiking, kayaking, angling and bird-watching.

Each lodge offers something unique – a lakeside sundowners deck, a view over the river or a house among the trees. They each sleep between four and six people.

Where: Just outside the town of Sedgefield

Rate: From R900 per night

Golden Gates Highland National park

The five self-catering family cottages at Glen Reenen Rest Camp each have a fireplace and sit in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains of the Free State. It is close enough to the town of Clarens to head there for the day. From hiking to horse riding and abseiling, there is an outdoor activity to keep everyone warm.

Where: Just outside the town of Clarens

Rate: From 1,700 for two, R465 per extra adult, R233 per extra child

Marakele National Park

The park is in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains. Get close to a Cape vulture colony, go on a bush walk or seek out the Big Five by car. Not too far from the main gate lies the Bontle Rest Camp made up of campsites and Safari tents. The safari tents are self-catering, have private stoeps and views of the bush and mountain. Not far from the camp is a large dam, perfect to park next to with your rusks and coffee to watch the sunrise.

Where: About 250km from Pretoria

Rate: From R1,400 for two
