Parts of northern Tasmania, Australia have received snowfall for the first time in 40 years. Some areas were blanketed in 30cm of snow on Tuesday, August 4, reports The Guardian.
Snow in the south of Tasmania is not altogether uncommon but some locals in the north said this was the first time they had seen snow in their lives.
According to Strange Sounds, the snow was caused by an air mass moving north from Antarctica, calling the phenomenon an ‘Antarctic blast.’
‘It’s a very rare event for Tasmania. We also saw some snow settled in Hobart with the last two occurrences in 1986 and 2015. However, it’s not uncommon to see snow in the south of Tasmania,’ Matthew Thomas of the Bureau of Meteorology told Yahoo News Australia.
Meteorologist Ben Domensino took to Twitter, saying: ‘Grindelwald – a Swiss-themed village just north of Launceston – was looking a little more Swiss than usual this morning. At 190m above sea level in northern Tasmania, this is a rare sight.’
