St Helena Airport suspends commercial flights after safety downgrade

Posted on 10 February 2026 By Miriam Kimvangu

Commercial flights to and from St Helena have been temporarily suspended after the island’s airport lost its Category 6 safety certification.

According to TravelNews, the decision has halted scheduled services and left one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands accessible only by sea or limited aircraft operations.

The downgrade follows recent technical assessments which found that St Helena Airport’s firefighting equipment and operational readiness no longer meet the standards required for larger commercial aircraft. As a result, Airlink has cancelled its scheduled flights to the island while authorities work to restore compliance.

The airport has since been approved for Category 4 operations. This allows smaller aircraft, including medical evacuation flights, to land, but commercial passenger services remain grounded. Officials have indicated that flights are unlikely to resume before at least 20 February, pending the completion of corrective measures and further inspections.

The suspension has immediate implications for residents, businesses and the tourism sector. St Helena relies heavily on air connectivity for supplies, visitors and economic activity, particularly given its isolated position in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Known for its dramatic landscapes, endemic wildlife and layered history, including its association with Napoleon Bonaparte, St Helena has steadily grown as a niche travel destination. Travellers planning a visit are advised to monitor airline announcements closely and delay bookings until flight schedules are confirmed.
