South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the celebrated suspension bridge at the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp, located in the Tsitsikamma section of Garden Route National Park, will be closed for essential maintenance from 1 to 15 September 2025.

Please note: the closure applies exclusively to weekdays (Monday through Friday), while the bridge will remain open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays.
This iconic structure, a highlight for both domestic and international travellers, offers unforgettable views across the river mouth and towards the Indian Ocean. According to reports by Travel News Africa, SANParks emphasises that this temporary shutdown underscores their dedication to maintaining safety standards and preserving the park’s infrastructure quality.
Despite the weekday bridge closure, the rest of the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp remains open and ready to welcome guests. Visitors can still enjoy a wide array of outdoor adventures and activities that showcase the region’s diverse natural beauty:
- The Waterfall Trail and Otter Trail (available for day hikes) traverse lush forests and rugged coastal landscapes.
- The Loerie and Blue Duiker Trails offer shorter, more family-friendly paths.
- Kayak and lilo excursions provide water-based thrills through the gorge.
- There are ample opportunities for birdwatching, nature photography and wildlife observation.
- The on-site restaurant and gift shop remain open for refreshments and souvenirs throughout the maintenance period.

This temporary weekday pause is part of SANParks’ proactive maintenance schedule, designed to ensure the suspension bridge remains structurally sound and visitors continue to enjoy a safe and memorable experience for years to come. By leaving weekend access unaffected, the impact on leisure travellers (especially those coming from afar) is minimised.
