Police have arrested a Vietnamese man in Limpopo after discovering 60kg of lion claws, teeth, and other items in his possession after a four-month probe into wildlife trafficking, eNCA reports.

The man arrested is being charged with ‘connection with the illegal trade in wildlife and illegal possession of a firearm.’ The police also raided an associated farm near Bela-Bela in Limpopo and two storage units in Pretoria.

They seized 4.2 kg of lions teeth, 680g of lion claws, more than 60kg of processed animal products believed to be lion gelatine, and an illegal firearm.

The suspect was then charged with ‘illegal possession of a threatened species’ when appearing in court on Friday. This case has been postponed to 20 August 2021 to ensure that a translator is present.

This successful bust was part of a four-month investigation that included members of the Green Scorpions, a special unit responsible for enforcing environmental legislation.
