The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway (TMAC) will suspend operations for five weeks for its annual maintenance.

‘The process this year is extensive and complex, which will require a five-week complete shutdown as the work scheduled for this year cannot be carried out between normal operations,’ TMAC managing director Wahida Parker told TimesLive.

Rides from the upper and lower stations of the cableway will be closed from 25 July to 28 August.

‘The focus for this year will be on the track-ropes, which carry most of the weight of the cable cars,’ said Emile Streicher, the executive technical manager. Additionally, special attention will also be given to ‘the brackets from which the cabins are suspended and the hydraulic braking system at the lower station’.

But this means it’s time to strap on your hiking boots and get on to the trails – you can still hike the mountain to enjoy mountain range and its extraordinary biodiversity.

Although the cableway will be closed, TMAC’s TAP bar will still be serving up good times.
