Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain Cableway will close temporarily from Monday, 27 July to Sunday, 9 August 2026 for its annual maintenance shutdown.

The two-week closure allows engineers and safety teams to carry out detailed inspections, testing and maintenance on the cable car system. According to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC), the work is essential to ensure the attraction continues operating to the highest international safety standards.
“Safety remains our highest priority, and this annual maintenance period is a critical part of ensuring that the Cableway continues to operate safely and reliably for the millions of people who visit us each year,” said Wahida Parker, Managing Director of TMACC.
“We understand that the temporary closure may be disappointing for visitors who already have travel plans in place, and we appreciate their understanding while we carry out this essential work.”
During the shutdown, all facilities and commercial operations at both the Upper and Lower Stations will be closed to the public.
What visitors need to know

Cable car operations will be suspended: No trips up or down the mountain will operate between 27 July and 9 August.

Station facilities will be closed: This includes restaurants, bars, retail outlets and ablution facilities such as VIEWS by De Grendel, TEN67 Eatery, KLOUD Bar, TAP Bar and The Shop at the Top.

Hiking routes remain open: Visitors can still hike Table Mountain, but they will need to descend on foot as no cable car service will be available.

Hikers should prepare carefully: TMACC recommends carrying enough water, snacks, warm clothing and suitable hiking gear, especially during winter conditions on the mountain.
Birthday ticket holders
South African citizens with birthdays in July or August can still redeem their free birthday return ticket during their birthday month, provided they do so outside the maintenance closure dates.
TMACC says operational updates will continue to be shared on its website and official social media channels throughout the shutdown.
The Cableway is expected to reopen on Monday, 10 August 2026, weather permitting.
