There’s something about spotting Table Mountain on the horizon that still gives locals a little pause. Whether you’ve lived in Cape Town your whole life or you’re visiting from Joburg, it never quite loses its magic. Now, just in time for Easter and the school holidays, there’s another reason to make the trip up: the return of the ‘Local is Lekker’ ticket special.

According to The South African, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company has brought back its popular discount, giving South Africans a rare chance to experience one of the country’s most iconic views without the usual price tag.

A deal that feels made for families

From 1 March until 30 April 2026, South African citizens can grab return cableway tickets at a reduced rate. Adults pay R250, while children between four and 17 pay just R100. In a time when even a simple outing can feel pricey, it’s the kind of deal that makes a spontaneous day trip feel possible again.

You will need a valid South African ID to book, and tickets are only available online. There is one catch: you have to plan ahead. Tickets must be purchased before your visit, and they won’t be sold on the day. With limited availability, early booking is key.

For many families, this special shows up at exactly the right moment. The Easter break and school holidays often leave parents searching for something memorable to do with the kids. A cable car ride up Table Mountain ticks all the boxes: outdoors, scenic, and just a little bit adventurous.

Why locals still keep coming back

Even for those who’ve been before, the experience rarely feels repetitive. The rotating cable car, the sudden drop away from the city below, and that first step onto the summit all carry a sense of occasion.

Since opening in 1929, the cableway has carried more than 33 million visitors to the top. That number alone says something about its staying power. Generations of South Africans have made the trip, often returning with visiting friends or family as if introducing them to an old favourite.

The special comes at a time when many South Africans are actively looking for more affordable travel experiences. For many, it is less about the discount and more about being reminded to revisit a place that is easy to take for granted.

A global icon that still belongs to locals

Table Mountain was recently ranked among the most beautiful mountain landscapes in the world, placing 14th on a global list. It continues to hold its own on the global stage. But for South Africans, it is more than just a postcard backdrop. It is a symbol, a meeting point between city life and nature, and for many, a place tied to personal memories.

There is also something quietly powerful about locals reclaiming spaces that often feel dominated by tourists. Specials like this shift the focus back to South Africans, encouraging people to experience their own landmarks with fresh eyes.

Before you go, here’s what to remember

If you are planning a visit, keep a few practical details in mind. Tickets must be booked online in advance and are limited, so waiting too long could mean missing out. Prices will return to normal after 30 April, so this window is your best chance to go at a reduced rate.

With cooler months around the corner, this might be one of the last opportunities to enjoy the mountain in milder weather. On a clear day, the views stretch endlessly across the city, the ocean, and the surrounding landscape. It is the kind of moment that reminds you why this place continues to draw millions.

For now, the message is simple: if you’ve been meaning to go, this is your sign.
