Passengers will pass through Tanzania, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Angola.

Communications manager at Rovos Rail Brenda Vos-Fitchet told Tourism Update that the inaugural train voyage will set off on 16 July 2019 from Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam. Guests on the train will even get to visit the Selous Game Reserve there.

In Zambia, there will be a two-night safari stay at South Luangwa National Park.

Next, you’re in the DRC for a city tour of Lubumbashi, the second largest city in the country after its capital, Kinshasa. Then it’s on to Angola along the Benguela line. This leg of the journey will include walking tours where travellers will be taught about the history of the cities. The trip ends in Lobito on the Atlantic coast.

For this luxury trip, you’ll pay a luxurious price. For two sharing, you can enjoy all this from $12,820 (about R178,0000. This includes your accommodation onboard, where a first-tier air-conditioned room includes a bathroom with a shower, a double bed or two singles in an upper and lower bed, as well as minibar and cupboard storage facilities.

‘To be able to introduce a new adventure after 29 years in operation is exciting and presents me with a refreshing operational challenge. It’s taken over two years to acquire permission and have our proposed itinerary approved by the respective authorities. My team and I have flown across our borders on a few occasions to meet the relevant officials, drive the route and conduct site visits in an effort to smooth the way as best we can for our band of intrepid travellers who will hopefully join us on this expedition,’ says Rohan Vos, owner and CEO of Rovos Rail.
