According to travelnews.africa, the Franschhoek Pass, a key tourism and commuter route linking Franschhoek with surrounding Winelands destinations, was shut following heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides that damaged sections of road infrastructure in the region. Reports indicate that ongoing safety concerns and unstable terrain have made the route unsafe for motorists.

Known for its sweeping mountain views and winding roads through vineyards and valleys, the pass is a popular route for self-drive travellers exploring the Cape Winelands. The closure is expected to affect tourism traffic, local businesses and day-trip itineraries during an already busy travel period.

The broader Franschhoek region remains open to visitors, with wine estates, restaurants, accommodation establishments and tourism experiences continuing to operate. However, travellers are being encouraged to check road conditions in advance and make use of alternative routes where possible.

Often referred to as the “French Corner” of the Cape, Franschhoek remains one of South Africa’s best-known food and wine destinations, attracting visitors with its mountain scenery, historic wine estates and acclaimed culinary scene.

Tourism operators in the area are hopeful that repairs can begin soon, although no reopening date for the pass has yet been confirmed. Authorities are expected to continue assessing damage caused by the recent storms across affected parts of the Western Cape.
