Unusually large locust swarms sighted in Northern Cape Posted by Anita Froneman on 8 February 2021 Exceptionally large swarms of locusts were sighted in the Northern Cape. This is believed to be a result of unseasonal rain in the area. ‘Huge swarms of locusts have been reported on the road between Britstown and Vosburg,’ Facebook user Maria Thorpe said on February 8. ‘Britstown is a small farming town situated in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, in the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality. The swarms are still in the “hopper” stage,’ Thorpe continued. ‘Once they take to the wing (fly) it will be difficult to contain. The tar roads seem to turn to gravel as vehicles struggle for traction while driving through these swarms. If they reach the farming districts there will be massive destruction to crops,’ she concluded. The brown locust is native to the semi-arid Karoo. The original owner of the video is not confirmed and it was also shared by community group SP News and Info on February 7.
