Mild, sun-drenched days are perfect for picnics. Pretoria and its surrounds have no lack of beautiful parks, fields and reserves where you can kick back and relax with your family or significant other.

This tranquil picnic spot is next to the Hennops River. Pack a basket with your favourite snacks and drinks, take a stroll and reward yourself with an indulgent picnic.

Tickets are R100/adult and R50/schoolchildren. Fees include hiking and mountain biking.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve

If you’re looking for a fun day out, with the possibility of a bit of wildlife-spotting thrown into the mix, Rietvlei is worth a visit. You can either pack your own picnic or, if time is on your side, bring along your tjop en sous and braai. The picnic spots can get busy though, so best arrive early.

This urban park is easily accessible and free to use. With ample shade and wide-open spaces, this is the perfect day out. Grab the kids, a blanket, a book for you and a soccer ball for them, and off you go!

If you’re looking for things to do in Pretoria, Van Gaalen is definitely worth a visit. Just a five-minute drive from the Haartbeespoort Dam, Van Gaalen boasts mountain-biking and running trails, a restaurant and beautiful picnic spots where you can relax and watch the kids play. The trails are perfect for exploring the area’s breathtaking scenery, and the restaurant is a great place to refuel after a day of adventure.

There’s an amazing selection of homemade cheeses and wines and if that doesn’t sell it to you… one word: stroopwafels. Picnic baskets for two from R480.

Delta Park

Home to the Delta Environmental Centre, which consults and educates on all matters environmental, this park is any bird watcher’s paradise. There are numerous beautiful walking trails and gorgeous views.
