Kuganha: The luxury Karoo escape where your tent becomes the spa

Posted on 17 September 2026 By Zayaan Marthinus

What if the best way to truly switch off was to stop moving altogether?

That’s the thinking behind Kuganha, a new luxury wellness safari in the Western Cape where guests can experience the Big Five, expansive Karoo landscapes and an extraordinary spa experience – without ever having to leave their private tented suite.

Set within a 10 000-hectare rewilded Big Five conservancy, less than two-and-a-half hours from Cape Town, Kuganha is taking a different approach to the traditional safari lodge. Here, wellness isn’t tucked away in a separate spa building. The tent is the spa.

When the tent becomes the wellness retreat

Each of Kuganha’s ten private tented suites measures at least 320 square metres, making them among the largest one-bedroom private tented safari suites in Africa.

But it’s what happens inside that makes the concept particularly unusual.

Every suite has its own sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool, salt halotherapy chamber and flotation therapy pool. There are also twin massage beds, a relaxation lounge, outdoor shower, double soaking baths, private plunge pool and Jacuzzi, all opening onto an expansive private deck.

In other words, guests don’t need to schedule their entire day around visiting a spa.

They can move between heat, cold, steam, water, massage and stillness entirely within their own private space.

On arrival, guests are introduced to the suite through a guided wellness ritual, beginning with a cold plunge before moving through sauna, salt halotherapy and a steam shower. A flotation experience can then be enjoyed later, whenever the mood strikes.

The idea is less about following a strict wellness programme and more about discovering what feels good at your own pace.

Wellness without the performance

Kuganha’s spa rituals include everything from relaxation and deep-tissue massages to Rungu massage and salt stone massage, as well as face and scalp treatments, body scrubs, wraps, manicures and pedicures.

For those wanting something more immersive, signature experiences include the Skin Hydrating Journey, Body Recovery Journey and Restoration Journey.

The latter combines specialised Rungu massage movements with a sensory-deprivation float, creating an experience designed around physical release and deep stillness.

Importantly, the wellness offering forms part of Kuganha’s fully inclusive experience. Guests have unlimited use of the private in-suite facilities during their stay, while treatments and rituals can be arranged around their own daily rhythm, subject to availability.

Rewilding the mind, body and soul

But wellness is only part of the story.

Kuganha sits on land that has undergone extensive conservation and rewilding, including the rehabilitation of indigenous vegetation and the reintroduction of wildlife.

The owners saw a connection between the restoration of the land and the restoration people increasingly seek in their own lives.

If the landscape can recover when given time, protection and space, perhaps people can too.

That philosophy extends to the food. Kuganha’s culinary offering focuses on fresh, organic, sustainable and locally sourced produce, with meals available in the privacy of the suite or at the restaurant overlooking the infinity pool and waterhole.

Beyond the tent, guests can experience safari wildlife, vast Karoo skies and the quiet that comes from being surrounded by thousands of hectares of restored wilderness.

Recently recognised by Robb Report among its 50 greatest luxury hotels in the world for 2026, Kuganha is carving out a new niche: the luxury wellness safari.

And perhaps that is what makes the concept so appealing.

You don’t have to chase relaxation here.

You simply have to arrive, close the door and let the pace of the outside world fall away. Discover Kuganha.
