Not every couple dreams of a weekend spent beside a swimming pool with a book.
For those who would rather spend Saturday hiking through mountains, cycling country roads, paddling on a river or heading out in search of wildlife, South Africa has plenty of destinations that make it easy to stay busy.
These five weekends combine outdoor adventure with good food, interesting towns and plenty of reasons to get out of your accommodation.
1. Elgin Valley, Western Cape

Cycle, hike and eat your way through the valley
The Elgin Valley makes an easy active escape from Cape Town, particularly for couples who want to combine exercise with plenty of food stops.
Mountain biking is one of the area’s biggest draws, with routes through orchards, forests and vineyards. You can spend the morning on two wheels before switching gears for a hike or scenic walk.
The valley is also ideal for a slower kind of exploration. Its farm stalls, restaurants, cider producers and wine farms mean you don’t have to choose between an active weekend and a good meal.
Trail’s End Bike Hotel is another option for cycling-focused visitors, while The Orchard Farm Stall makes an easy stop for something to eat while exploring the Grabouw side of the valley.
Make a weekend of it
Start Saturday with an early bike ride before heading out for breakfast or lunch at one of the valley’s farm stalls. Spend the afternoon visiting a wine or cider producer, then head back into the countryside for sunset.
On Sunday, swap the bike for walking and explore one of the area’s trails before making one final food stop on the way home.
Best for: Couples who like cycling, farm stalls and having plenty of food options between activities.
2. Cederberg, Western Cape

Hike, climb and swim among the mountains
The Cederberg is for couples who want their weekend to feel properly outdoorsy.
The region’s dramatic sandstone formations create a natural playground for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and bouldering. There are also rock pools for cooling off after a long day on the trails.
Cyclists can choose from several mountain-bike routes, including trails around Dwarsrivier and Mount Ceder. Routes range from relatively manageable rides to longer options for experienced cyclists.
The area also offers something particularly appealing after an energetic day: exceptionally dark skies. Stargazing is one of the Cederberg’s attractions, making an evening outside feel like another activity rather than simply downtime.
Cederberg Wilderness Area is a natural starting point for exploring the mountains, while the wider region has a choice of accommodation and places to eat.
Make a weekend of it
Spend Saturday hiking among the rock formations before cooling off in a mountain pool. If you’re experienced, add climbing or bouldering to the itinerary.
Sunday can be dedicated to cycling or a shorter hike, followed by a meal and a leisurely drive through the surrounding mountain country.
Best for: Couples who would rather trade a spa treatment for a mountain trail.

3. Hogsback, Eastern Cape

Chase waterfalls and explore the forests
Hogsback has all the ingredients of a romantic weekend, but couples don’t have to spend it sitting beside a fireplace.
The village is surrounded by indigenous forest, mountains and waterfalls, with a network of walking and hiking trails. Hogsback’s tourism organisation currently lists 22 permit-free walks and trails, ranging from easier walks to more challenging scrambles.
The waterfalls are a major attraction, but there’s more to do once you’ve dried off. Mountain bikes can be hired for exploring forestry trails and dirt roads, while horse-riding trails offer another way to see the countryside.
For couples looking for something more adventurous, guided activities can include abseiling. Hogsback Adventures, for example, offers a combination of mountain biking, hiking and abseiling around Madonna & Child Waterfall.
Make a weekend of it
Spend Saturday morning walking through the forest to one of the waterfalls, then explore the village and its arts-and-crafts offerings.
On Sunday, hire bikes or book a guided adventure before settling in for a meal at one of the village’s restaurants.
Best for: Couples who want forest walks, waterfalls and a little bit of adrenaline.
4. Clarens, Free State

Hike, cycle and explore a mountain town
Clarens is proof that an active weekend doesn’t have to mean disappearing completely into the wilderness.
The small Free State town sits beneath the Maluti Mountains and combines hiking, cycling, horse riding, rock climbing and other outdoor activities with galleries, restaurants and breweries.
Golden Gate Highlands National Park is close enough to make it part of a weekend itinerary, giving couples the option of hiking among the area’s distinctive sandstone landscapes and looking for wildlife.
Closer to town, cycling and hiking trails provide an easier way to get outside without spending the whole day in the car. More adventurous couples can also look at activities such as abseiling, quad biking or kayaking in the wider area.
And then there’s the town itself. Clarens has more than 20 galleries and a strong food and craft-beer scene, so there is plenty to explore once you’ve put away the hiking boots.
Make a weekend of it
Head into Golden Gate early for a hike and some wildlife spotting. Return to Clarens for lunch, then spend the afternoon wandering through galleries and shops.
On Sunday, choose between mountain biking, horse riding or another trail before finishing the weekend with a meal and locally brewed beer.
Best for: Couples who want adventure with a side of art, food and small-town wandering.
5. Waterberg, Limpopo

Go beyond the game drive
The Waterberg is an ideal choice for couples who love wildlife but don’t want their entire weekend to revolve around sitting in a safari vehicle.
The Limpopo region is home to private and provincial reserves, including Marakele National Park, and offers a wide range of outdoor activities. These include game drives, horseback safaris, canoeing, hiking and other adventure activities.
That variety makes it possible to build a weekend around different experiences rather than doing the same thing twice.
A guided walk, horseback outing or another outdoor activity can follow a morning game drive. Depending on where you stay, there are also opportunities for birding, fishing and exploring the Waterberg’s landscapes.
Horizon Horseback in the Vaalwater area is one option for couples wanting to experience the landscape from horseback, while the wider Waterberg has numerous safari lodges and reserves.
Make a weekend of it
Arrive Friday afternoon and use the evening for a game drive or sundowner. Spend Saturday morning looking for wildlife before swapping the vehicle for a walking or horseback experience.
On Sunday, take your time over breakfast before exploring more of the Waterberg’s scenic routes or stopping at a local attraction on the journey home.
Best for: Couples who want wildlife, wide-open spaces and more active ways to experience the bush.
A romantic weekend doesn’t have to mean doing nothing. From cycling through the Elgin Valley and scrambling over Cederberg rocks to chasing waterfalls in Hogsback, hiking around Clarens or exploring the Waterberg on horseback, these destinations make it easy to fill a weekend with experiences.
