Karkloof: The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands escape built around forests, farms and fresh air

Imagine waking to mist hanging over the hills, spending the morning beneath a canopy of mistbelt forest, then ending the afternoon with a long lunch, a spa treatment or a quiet drink overlooking the Midlands.

Karkloof has a way of making this kind of day feel completely natural. Set in KwaZulu-Natal’s Midlands, the area brings together mistbelt forests, open grasslands, wetlands and working farms. This creates the kind of countryside escape where adventure and rest co-exist beautifully.

At its heart is the Karkloof Conservancy, a roughly 40 000-hectare landscape of natural forests, grasslands and wetlands. The area is recognised for its biodiversity, with three of South Africa’s endangered crane species found here, alongside species including samango monkeys, bushbuck and the Karkloof blue butterfly.

Into the forest

The mistbelt forests are perhaps Karkloof’s defining feature.

They also carry a history that is easily overlooked. Across KwaZulu-Natal, many mistbelt forest patches were cleared for timber between about 1880 and 1940. Today, conservation efforts are focused on protecting what remains while restoring the broader landscape around it.

One of the most iconic ways to experience the forest is from above. The Karkloof Canopy Tour takes visitors into the forest canopy, travelling between platforms on 10 zipline slides. Guides explain the forest’s ecology, trees and giant ferns, with views across the surrounding valley and waterfall. The tour currently includes 12 platforms and takes around two hours.

Water, trails and open country

While the mistbelt forests are the main character, there are other layers to the experience too. Wetlands form an important part of the landscape and its water catchment systems, while the surrounding grasslands provide habitat for a variety of wildlife.

Then there’s Karkloof Falls, surrounded by the forests and countryside that make the Midlands so distinctive.

For those looking for a little more adventure, there is mountain biking, hiking and trail running. The landscape constantly shifts between forest, farmland, streams and grassland, giving outdoor adventures a distinctly rural feel. The Karkloof Trail Run takes this a step further, with routes through the forests and countryside around Karkloof Country Club.

The softer side of Karkloof

While Karkloof is generally regarded as a wild escape, not every day needs to revolve around outdoor adventure. There is a softer, rejuvenating side to Karkloof too.

Karkloof Safari Spa offers a slower counterpoint to the area’s outdoor activities, with private villas overlooking the surrounding landscape and spa facilities including hydrotherapy pools, a sauna and steam room. The spa has been operating in the Karkloof Valley since 2008.

It’s this delicate combination that makes Karkloof especially appealing. You can spend the morning moving through the forest and the afternoon doing very little at all.

A Midlands escape with balance

What makes Karkloof special is how easily a day can shift between the two. You can spend the morning following a forest trail, arrive back with muddy shoes and tired legs, then trade them for a comfy robe, a long lunch and an afternoon beside the water.

It’s a softer kind of adventure, one where being active and doing very little can both feel like part of the experience. Karkloof gives you enough wildness to feel like you have escaped, while still offering the comforts that make a weekend away feel like a treat.
