The trains, though basic, provide essential amenities and a sense of camaraderie among travellers. In recent years, efforts have been made to revitalise and modernise the service, ensuring it continues to serve as a vital link for many South Africans.
Namibia’s Desert Express

Once a celebrated luxury train journey through the Namibian desert, the Desert Express ceased operations in November 2020. The train, which connected Windhoek and Swakopmund, offered passengers a unique perspective of Namibia’s arid landscapes.
However, due to a combination of factors, including a shortage of operational locomotives and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism, the service has been permanently discontinued.
TransNamib, the state-owned railway company, has indicated that the Desert Express will not return to service. Travellers seeking to explore Namibia’s landscapes now have alternative options, such as guided tours and self-drive adventures.
