Celebrate the new year from the comfort of your own bed

Prior to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Capetonians flocked to the V&A Waterfront to watch the spectacular midnight fireworks display to kick off the new year with triumph. Naturally, the pandemic threw a wrench in those plans. However, the V&A Waterfront was not easily deterred, and found a way for Capetonians to celebrate the new year from the comfort of their own homes.

Last year, several beams were lit to kick off the new year. These beams symbolise creativity, hope, love, community, joy, harmony, and gratitude, according to their website. The lighting of these beams were livestreamed on Youtube and Facebook pages. In line with Covid-19 protocols, this year will be the same. Viewers can sign in ten minutes before midnight, and also enjoy a performance by the husband and wife duo – Deville.

For those who will be out celebrating elsewhere but still want to watch the spectacular display – not to worry. The beams will be lit and livestreamed for six consecutive nights after New Year’s at 9pm.
