Korean airplane overruns runway after multiple failed landing attempts

A Korean Air plane overran a runway at the Cebu International Airport in the Philippines while attempting to land in poor weather on 23 October. No injuries were reported.

Korean Air flight KE631, which had departed from Incheon to Cebu, had attempted to land twice in poor weather, and on the third attempt overran the runway, according to the South Korean air carrier who delivered an apology.

‘We sincerely apologize to our passengers and their families for causing trouble. We will do our best in cooperating with the local aviation authorities and Korean authorities for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of this event,’ said Korean Air President Woo Kee-hong

The airport’s runway has been closed since the overrun. Although the runway was originally scheduled to reopen, the reopening has been pushed delayed as the airport hasn’t been able to get a crane to lift the plane, still in the field, to a separate area.

Korean Air has not had a fatal passenger crash since 1997, according to Aviation Safety Network, a website that compiles aviation accidents.

The airline had a poor safety record at that time but sought outside help from Boeing Co and Delta Air Lines Inc to improve its standards.
