On a recent trip to the Kruger National Park, Hanno Erasmus had a close encounter with a young lion from the Lukimbi breakaway pride on the H3 not far from Afsaal picnic site.

The inquisitive young male was stationed in front of Erasmus’s vehicle before coming to lay next to his car. Minutes later, the lion approached the vehicle and was intrigued by his reflection in the side mirror. He gave it a quick bite before moving off.

Did you know?

Lions are known to be dangerous predators, but they also have a comical side to them – they ‘smile’ as a form of communication within their pride. The male lion or lioness will lift its head up and then bare its teeth out by lifting its top lip, making it look like it’s smiling.
