Richards Bay is recasting itself as a gateway to cultural storytelling. TIFA’s arrival marked a statement that this coastal town is emerging as both a business hub and tourism destination.

As reported by Travel and Tour World, the city played host to TIFA 2025 (the Tourism Investment Forum Africa) from the 28th to 29th of August. The event transformed the Thembele Conference Centre into a hive of global conversation, investment and endless tourism policy.
Delegates explored a suite of bold new developments and unveiled a list of projects to build towards Richard Bay’s tourism revival.
- The Ridge: A vibrant mixed-use precinct that will flow from residences into shops, offices and boutique hotels.
- The Steel Bridge: A R130 million gateway bridging the waterfront to the lagoon.
- ICC Waterfront Precinct: Spanning 45 hectares, this master plan blends a convention centre, hotel, casino, retail, housing and water‑sport zones into one destination for both business and leisure.
- Waterfront Precinct Development: A 153.7‑hectare greenfield investment of R332 million. This development will frame Richards Bay’s new shoreline in hotels, urban living and recreational spaces.
The city is also investing R1.25 billion into ICT, renewables, agro‑processing and advanced manufacturing through the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) to support the tourism boom.
Richards Bay Airport Relocation and Redevelopment is also under construction. A R1.25 billion investment is set to birth a modern “airport city”, streamlining access for global guests arriving to explore the bay’s coastal beauty.
Beyond Tourism
TIFA also introduced innovations like the SME Pavilion, Sustainability Village and Social Impact Award, showcasing how tourism can support local entrepreneurship and emerging African leadership. At panel sessions on various topics the forum’s message was made clear. Tourism in Africa isn’t just about prettier pictures, it’s about investments that sustain communities and amplify local culture.
